Abstract

intubation was 62, and the median number of colonoscopies completed at the time of analysis was 233. Excluding the 6 fellows who had not yet reached competency in cecal intubation, there was good correlation between number of procedures needed to reach competency in SF and cecal intubation (rhoZ0.52). Each additional colonoscopy required to become competent in SF intubation was associated with 2.5 additional colonoscopies needed to reach competency in cecal intubation (pZ0.10) (Figure 1). Conclusions: CUSUM learning curves for competency in SF intubation are an early indicator for the pace of attaining competency in cecal intubation. Endoscopic educators may find CUSUM a helpful tool in identifying fellows early in training who would benefit from enhanced endoscopic training, such as pairing with a master endoscopy educator or use of video colonoscopy courses. Funding provided by the ASGE 2011 Quality in Endoscopic Research Award. Figure 1. Scatter plot of splenic flexure competency against cecal intubation competency. Figure is restricted to fellows who have reached competency in cecal intubation.
