Effectiveness of Structured Teaching Program on Knowledge, Attitude and Practice Regarding Breast Self-Examination among Women who are Admitted and their Attendants in Christian Institute of Health Sciences and Research, Dimapur, Nagaland

Abstract

Introduction: Breast cancer is a global health issue and a leading cause of death among women internationally.Breast self-examination (BSE) is an important screening measure for detecting breast cancer. Knowing the fact motivated to assess the effectiveness of structured teaching program on knowledge, attitude and practice of women regarding breast self-examination. Materials and Methods: The study design was one group pre-testpost-test.It was done among the women admitted in Christian Institute of Health Sciences and Research, Dimapur and it was approved by Research Committee. The sample size was 57 and the samples were selected by convenience sampling. Data was collected using self-administered questionnaire. Structured teaching with demonstration of BSE was done immediately after pre assessment and the post-test was done after 48 hours. Data was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Result: The result of the study showed that in pre-test, 58 (98%) had inadequate knowledge, 48 (84%) had positive attitude and 55 (96%) had inadequate practice towards breast self-examination and the post-test revealed 37 (65%) had adequate knowledge, 57 (100%) had positive attitude and 53 (93%) had adequate practice towards BSE. Conclusion: The study showed that the knowledge and practice on breast self-examination were inadequate. It has been found that majority of the women do have good attitude towards BSE but still some women believe that BSE is something considered to be embarrassing. This study revealed that STP was effective to improve the knowledge, attitudeand practice on BSE among women.
