Abstract
- The recently comissioned TRISTAN electron-positron storage ring at the Laboratory for High Energy Physics in Japan (KEK) produces e+e- collisions at c.m. energies in the 50 to 60 GeV range. At these energies sensitive and unambiguous tests of the SU(2)xU(1) theory of the electroweak interactions[1] and the color SU(3) theory of the strong interactions, quantum chromodynamics (QCD),[2]can be carried out. In annihilation processes at c.m. energies near 60 GeV, the electro-weak model predicts the effects of the photon and Z° propagators to be comparable in strength; the interference between them produces forward-backward asymmetries in reactions such as e+e-→μ+μ- and e+e-→t+t-. Moreover, at these high energies, the separation of jets in multihadronic annihilation events becomes more pronounced and their association with the underlying parent partons is less ambiguous, facilitating studies of multi-jet QCD processes. This report briefly summarizes recent work done in these areas.
