Later, Franco accepted this suggestion and acted upon it, proposing a new name, A. excelsior for the Giant Fir and transferring the name A. grandis to the Cascade Fir. Such a name change would be deplorable, if it were necessary and would, in any case, render the application of the name A. grandis doubtful. In such circumstances it would be far preferable, but illegitimate, to propose new names for both species and not for one only. Fortunately, the argument in support of these name changes is faulty in several particulars.
