Abstract

The aim of this study is to estimate the clinical characteristics and treatment of epileptic seizures in children with tuberous sclerosis complex and to determine if there is a correlation between brain CT/MRI findings and evolution of epilepsy in these patients. The medical data of 11 children diagnosed with tuberous sclerosis and epileptic seizures were retrospectively studied. Brain imaging was performed in all patients and revealed cortical tubers varying in number and location and/or intracranial calcifications. The children were treated employing different antiepileptic drugs single or add-on. Partial seizure control was achieved in 36.36% patients. In our study, there is no statistical relationship between epileptic seizures outcome and brain imaging abnormaties, but this conclusion, drawn from a small number of cases, represents only a starting point, remaining to be confirmed by further larger studies.
