Abstract

Anaerobic digestion (AD) of poultry wastes is considered one of the best alternatives for handling the current problematic task of managing these wastes, usually produced in large proportions globally, leading to energy and high nutrient recovery. This chapter highlights some of the environmental issues arising from current management strategies of poultry wastes. Further, it discusses the processes involved in the AD of poultry wastes as well as the value-added products that can be generated from the process. This review also includes the technoeconomic analysis of the process and some challenges arising from the environmental assessment of AD. Finally, critical areas for further consideration involved in the AD of poultry wastes are highlighted.
