Abstract
- A primary resection and reanastomosis of the colon is often the procedure of choice, even in the presence of a significant stenotic element, provided there are no mayor disturbances of water-electrolyte homeostasis. In a series of 100 consecutive colonic resections (23 complicated by perforation, 9 by ileus, and 2 by bleeding), 97 patients were treated by primary resection (92 without a protective colostomy). No untoward effects were noted specifically due to this technique. The overall mortality rate was 4%, a favorable result when compared with the cumulative risk of a multiple stage procedure.
