Abstract

This chapter discusses the role of multimodality imaging [i.e. transthoracic echocardiogram (TTE), cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) and computed tomography (CT)] for three congenital aortic lesions: bicuspid aortic valve, coarctation of the aorta and Marfan syndrome. The wealth of data contained in the imaging datasets has also allowed to explore innovative methodologies either within the imaging modalities themselves, increasing the amount or type of data available for the investigation, or at an image-processing stage, providing novel insights into these important congenital defects. Such imaging or imaging-based innovations include 4D flow CMR, computational fluid dynamics and statistical shape modelling, all holding potential to offer novel insights into haemodynamics, wall mechanics and morphology. From a translational standpoint, this chapter also explores the role of virtual stenting and 3D printing in the clinical practice. Overall, these innovations can play a role in informing and supporting diagnosis and prognosis and can produce new knowledge on concepts such as aortopathy progression and other complications that can affect patients with bicuspid aortic valve, coarctation of the aorta and Marfan syndrome.
