Abstract

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) encounters low temporal and/or spatial variation of the sensed physical parameters during a small time interval. In this work, we exploit this high spatial and/or temporal correlation of sensor data to suitably encode multiple data from different sensor nodes, leading to a reduced length of data. We propose a run-length block coding scheme, where in the encoded message, we keep the transmitter in silent mode during the presence of the most predominant symbol ‘0’ and use unique hybrid FSK - ASK based modulation/demodulation technique for the communication process with a non-coherent receiver, that leads to a significant reduction in transmitter & receiver energy. Significant savings in transceiver (CC1100, CC2420) energy is analyzed on real-life dataset by means of CO 2 footprint, leading to a low-cost and supreme sustainable energy-efficient communication model for WSN.
