Few studies have investigated the frequency of HNPCC in patients (pts.) having undergone surgery for CRC. These have shown a marked geographic variation, ranging from 0.5% to 13%. The aim of this study is to estimate the frequency of HNPCC in the Uruguayan population. Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis of a cohort of non-selected pts. operated for CRC in the Hospital Central de las Fuerzas Armadas (Montevideo, Uruguay) between January 1987 and December 2002. Cases were classified in 3 groups according to personal and family history: 1) those fulfilling Amsterdam criteria, classified as HNPCC; 2) those not fulfilling Amsterdam criteria but considered as a population of increased risk for cancer (PIR); and 3) those classified as sporadic CRC.
