Abstract

Almost every electrical activity recorded from the brain has been tested on operant conditioning. Different techniques for detection and transduction, as well as for quantification and feedback, have been used. Basically, studies dealing with the regulation and operant conditioning of brain electrical activity can be divided into three types: (a) conditioning of single neurons, (b) EEG frequency bands; and (c) event-related and slow potentials. The following overview attempts to summarize these studies. The papers presented in Part II and Part III provide an introduction to the research being conducted at present. A brief description of those fields which have received less attention in the more recent research will be presented in this paper.
