Abstract

A patient had massive ascites caused by chronic pancreatitis. Formation of the ascites was accompanied by little pain. The fluid was hemorrhagic and had a high protein content, but could be distinguished from effusions of other etiologies by a very high amylase content. The ascites subsided spontaneously after three weeks.
