Abstract

Japanese newspapers and television have unique characteristics, even from a global perspective. This chapter explores the structure of the market for newspapers and television – which are at the backbone of mass communication in Japan – and outlines the unique features of Japanese political broadcasting. It then shifts its focus to Japanese politicians themselves and considers their media strategies. Finally, it considers the evolving nature of political communication using the internet, an increasingly growing force in the contemporary Japanese media landscape.
