Abstract

Adhesion of polymer reinforced with TiC (Titanium carbide) nanoparticles (NPs) with steel surface is controlled by various factors. The research findings have revealed the multiple extents of contributing factors such as the role of adhesion of NPs and micro-particles (MPs) with steel surface depending on surface free energy (SFE), their friction depending on the shape, amount, and size against a steel surface and their reinforcement action in PAEK (polyaryletherketone) leading to cohesive or adhesive failure. Particles of TiC (nano and micro) were dispersed in (PAEK) matrix to develop nanocomposites and nano-adhesives to join the steel adherends. The developed composites and adhesives were characterized for physical, thermal, mechanical, and adhesive strength (Lap Shear Strength (LSS)). The composites with nano TiC particles performed significantly better than the micro-counterpart in all performance properties. Three wt. % TiC nanocomposite and adhesive performed the best. The Failure analysis of LSS samples indicated mixed failure. With the increase in the nano-particles extent of adhesive failure decreased, and cohesive failure increased. Few available models for nanocomposites were employed and validated.
