Abstract: This editorial provides information on the first draft of the human genome, and examines the impact this will have on the practice of medicine, with special reference to India. It examines what is currently possible in India, what we should do in the immediate future, and what is in store in the long run. The future is indeed bright and India needs to expand the genetic services and research facilities.
