An ambiguity in Volkoff's method

It is shown that the direct application of Volkoff's method for determining the quadrupole coupling tensor in a case where the magnetic nuclei are situated in crystallographically related, but magnetically nonequivalent, sites does not lead to a unique solution. For the deuteron quadrupole coupling tensor in gypsum two solutions are found, and it is shown that the tensor chosen earlier is not correct.
