Understanding bacterial biofilms

The severe problems and economic effects of corrosion and impeded fluid flow which biofilms can cause are well-known to industry, though relatively little is known of the physiology of the microorganisms involved or the mechanics of biofilm formation. Improved their detrimental effects to be more closely controlled, and even lead to applications exploiting their unique characteristics.
