Abstract

S TUDENTS of library resources may be tempted to contrast the collections of the libraries of American military schools with the monumental holdings of larger civilian colleges and universities. The use of such a yardstick is inappropriate, because the importance of a library collection depends on other factors as well as size. The distinction of important military libraries lies in their subject specialization more than in the number of items collected. A number of the libraries which are the subject of this report1 have collections as unique as the curriculums they reflect. Others have unusual concentrations of resources that are not extensively duplicated elsewhere. The object of this paper is to make these libraries and their work better known to librarians.2 From first-hand surveys of the collections discussed, it analyzes the holdings of selected military librariesfirst by format and second by subjects covered.
