The aetiology and clinical appearance of the diseases are described, and treatment options are briefly discussed where they exist. The article discusses the importance of both a thorough ophthalmic examination and familiarity with the mechanisms of ocular development, to enhance our understanding of the ocular pathology of these conditions and to achieve accurate diagnoses.
