Abstract

Anesthesiological support often is required outside the operating room in several remote locations. This environment represents a challenge for providers, who have to ensure high quality of care for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Flexibility is a key factor because anesthesiologists have to customize an anesthesia service to the particular requirements imposed by the actual context. The increased availability of short-acting drugs along with accurate noninvasive monitoring and improved sedation training programs has enabled effective and safe management of sedation also outside the operating room. In this chapter we highlight potential gray areas in the three steps of anesthesia: pre-procedural assessment, anesthesiological management, and discharge.
