Abstract

Latent tracks are formed in polyimide, polypropylene and polyethylene by irradiation with 0.5 to 3 GeV heavy ions. They are then doped with aqueous LiCl, organo- Li THF , or C 60 THF solutions for well-defined periods after the irradiation. Subsequently, the excess of non-trapped Li dopant fraction is washed out. The remaining lithium-doped polymer zones along the latent ion tracks are studied here. The depth distribution of the bonding efficiency, as determined by neutron depth profiling, points out an electronic nature of the bonding process.
