Abstract

Character strengths are widely valued behavioral tendencies that are authentic, energizing, and enable optimal functioning (Linley 2008). Some examples of strengths are curiosity, humor, leadership and perseverance. When adolescents are asked to identify and use their strengths for personal aims, they report higher psychological well-being (Ghielen, van Woerkom, & Christina Meyers, 2017). Yet, the impact of strength use for self-growth vs. benefiting other people remains unexamined. This study sets out to test whether using strengths to benefit others vs. the self may have a different impact on facets of psychological well-being among adolescents.
