Abstract
- In the publication the observed quantities were presented in terms of the averaged irradiance per spherical area but the theoretical calculations used the incident irradiance per projected area. Therefore a factor of 1/4 was accidentally omitted in comparing the theory with the observed quantities. This changes some of the values in Table 1 of our Letter (see below) but does not change the basic data or theory of the Letter. With the correction, the main conclusions of the Letter are strengthened; the need to consider negative feedbacks is even more strongly evident. As before, the physics of these feedbacks (such as the role of N–S transport or cloud formation) remains an open question. The necessary corrections to the publication are as follows
