Abstract: Between 1978 and 1983 fifty-two abdominal abscesses in 44 patients were drained percutaneously. 79% of the abscesses occurred as postoperative complications. The overall success rate was 60%, whereas only 42% of left subphrenic abscesses were cured. Complications were encountered in 4.5%. Reasons for drainage failures were: liver sequestration, loculation, fistulae and recurrences. Percutaneous abscess drainage is an alternative, and valuable addition, to surgery.
