Patient Applied Podofilox in the Treatment of Genital Warts: a Review

Since the early 1940s podophyllum resin has been used for the treatment of genital warts [1]. Physician’s use, acceptance, and perceived efficacy of this resin varies greatly. This is in part a reflection of the heterogeneity of podophyllin preparations as well as a lack of a well-defined treatment regimen for the resin. Since Kaplan’s original report nearly 50 years ago little has changed in how this resin is used in the treatment of genital warts. The effect of resin source, concentration frequency of application, and vehicle on safety and efficacy have not been studied.
