Abstract

This article focuses on the use of calixarenes, resorcinarene-based cavitands, and other related molecules as topologically directing platforms for the assembly of large, predominantly metal-directed supramolecular capsule assemblies; some examples involving the related building block cyclotriveratrylene are also covered, but to a lesser extent. We also highlight both noncovalent and metal-directed systems constructed from alternative ligands in order to introduce associated assembly strategies that have been applied to the building blocks highlighted here. Finally, we have also included some assemblies that lie between areas covered in separate volumes in this reference work, but that relate to the main theme of this chapter.
