Abstract

The tetrameric selenoenzyme GSH peroxidase (M=84000) catalyzes the reduction of a variety of hydroperoxides including H2O2 and serves to protect biomembranes and other essential cellular components against oxidative challenge [1,2,3]. GSH serves as specific electron donor substrate and alimentary selenium provides the prosthetic group, a selenocysteine residue.
