Abstract

Soil salinity has emerged as a serious threat to global food security. Salinity inhibits diverse physiological and metabolic processes of crops. Therefore it is important to understand the underlying mechanism of salt stress to unravel the key pathways operating inside the plant cell. Salt-tolerant crop varieties have also been developed using conventional breeding approaches. With this approach, it takes a longer time to develop a salt-resistance cultivar, especially in horticultural crops. Recent multiple omics technologies help to discover the key components inside the plant cell for salt tolerance. In this chapter, we highlight some of the molecular and omics approaches that could be potentially useful to mitigate the effect of salt stress in horticultural crops.
