Abstract

The material response of 5083‐H131 aluminum alloy subjected to dynamic loading has been investigated over the stress input range 1.5 to 8.0 GPa using plate impact shock experiments. All experiments were performed on the ARL 102 mm light gas gun. Both symmetric and asymmetric shock experiments were performed and exhibited planarity to within 1 mrad of tilt. The principal diagnostic consisted of VISAR recordings of the rear free‐surface velocity history with temporal resolution of 0.5 ns. Within this stress range considered we observe a two wave structure typical of elastic and plastic traveling waves. In prior work we reported the Hugoniot Elastic Limit (HEL), compression parameters, and shock EOS. Here we examine the data to determine the spall strength, pulse duration and tensile loading strain‐rate. We compare our results to other A15083 tempers.
