Abstract

This paper describes the development and preliminary testing of a unique air mattress system for the prevention of decubiti and the enhancement of circulation in bedridden and elderly individuals. The mattress body is constructed of an array of small air cells contained within a foam matrix. The pattern and duty cycle for pressurization of the individual cells is microprocessor controlled, allowing the uset to adjust the mattress for immediate comfort, to stimulate circulation in selected body regions, or to alternate the contact of various body regions with the mattress. The capability of varying the amount of pressure to various body parts will prevent the constant pressure against tissue that causes bed sores and impedes circulation in long-term, bedridden patients.
