Abstract

Northland Research, Inc. (Northland) has complete Phase I data recovery within a portion of the prehistoric site of La Villa (AZ T:12:148[ASM]), a large Hohokam village in the lower Salt River Valley. The 1.6-acre project area is in Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona. Maricopa County Human Services Campus plans to expand existing facilities into the subject property. La Villa is considered National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) eligible under Criterion D (information potential). Previous investigation in adjacent parcels have identified thousands of features associated with the prehistoric occupation of La Villa, including human burials. The purpose of Northland's Phase I data recovery efforts was to determine the nature and extent of subsurface deposits within the current project area. Toward this end, a program of limited subsurface testing was conducted. Mechanical excavation of 11 backhoe trenches-representing a 2.2 percent sample of the project area-resulted in the identification of 60 archaeological features.
