Abstract

All three present technologies for storing single copies of digital data (magnetic, optical, and solid state) are characterized by relatively short lifetimes, ranging from 5 to 30 years. There presently exists no inexpensive way to preserve one's digital data for posterity. This paper describes a research effort which is targeting 1,000 years (a millennium) for a new type of recordable optical storage.
