Crystal field in PrSn3

Abstract

Neutron inelastic scattering experiments have been performed on polycrystalline PrSn 3 to obtain information on the crystal field level structure. The measurements yield the crystal field parameters W = 0.158 ± 0.005 meV and x = 0.80 ± 0.03 which correspond to a Γ 5 ground state with an overall splitting of 74K. The importance of including exchange fluctuations in the data analysis is demonstrated.
