Abstract
- Ctenarytaina Ferris & Klyver (Figs 13, 41, 47, 77) Diagnosis: Head strongly deflected; genal processes cone-shaped, shorter than half the vertex length (Fig. 13). Antenna scarcely longer than head width, terminal setae strongly unequal; pterostigma present (Fig. 47). Metacoxa with tubercular meracanthus; mesotibia with a longitudinal outer apical comb of short bristles (Fig. 41). Biology and damage: Ctenarytaina eucalypti and C. spatulata are considered pests in plantations of Eucalyptus (Burckhardt et al. 1999; Santana & Burckhardt 2007). Immatures of both species live in colonies feeding on young plants or shoots, secreting waxy filaments and honeydew (Cadahia 1980; Santana & Burckhardt 2007), the latter promoting the growth of sooty mould (Santana et al. 1999; Pinzn et al. 2002; Santana & Burckhardt 2007). Reported damage for C. eucalypti includes dessication, distortion and deformation of leafs and shoots, which acquire a blackish gray coloration (Cadahia 1980). Host-plants: Eucalyptus (Myrtaceae) (Taylor 1997; Burckhardt et al. 1999; Hollis 2004). Distribution: Indo-Australian and African genus (Burckhardt 1994b; NHMB data), some Australian species introduced into Africa, America, Asia, Europe and New Zealand (Burckhardt & Queiroz 2012). Colombia: Ctenarytaina eucalypti (Pinzn et al. 2002). Remarks: This is the first record of Ctenarytaina spatulata in Colombia. Examined material: Ctenarytaina eucalypti: Boyac: 2 (female), Topaga, 546'1"N, 7240'59"W, 2900 m, 30-Jun-2012 (L.
