Abstract

This chapter presents an overview on the composition and Theology of Joshua 1-5. Episodes clearly defined in the traditional text of Joshua 1-5 were analyzed in the individual studies and used individually, yet these analyzes have been performed in an unmistakable synchronous connections between the units and their diachronic distinct layers. The chapter discusses forming layers that have shaped the structure of the canonical form of the text in Joshua 1-5. These layers are Deuteronomistic base layer, post-priest processing in Joshua 2-4 and exodus reminiscence in Joshua 5. The base layer of Joshua 3-4 results a narrative context, which is characterized by high cohesion of text interface and coherence of narrative features. The statement intention of the base layer of Joshua 3-4 is the legalization of Joshua as the leader of all Israel.
