Abstract

The context, uses and imprecision of the term territory demand the clarification of the concept for its application in geographical education, school cartography and spatial thought. From a pedagogical perspective, there are two principal aspects: The definition of associated terms (space, landscape, geographic region and place) and the question of the territory as a result of the multiple senses that society confers on the space it inhabits. This treatment is based on the theoretical-methodological structure from which it emerges: territory is not only space, this is part of its material essence, but does not exhaust it. Territory is, at the same time, a concrete, dynamic and temporally-determined construct, deconstruction and sociocultural reconstruction, which is possible to represent. Territory acquires meaning in the interrelation of materiality and sociocultural constructs, supporting practices of semanticisation, integrating social, geographic-critical, political and educational approaches. Conceptually, then, the territory is subject to development, through planning processes, oriented towards the constitution of territorialities. The study of territory has pedagogical potentialities for the teaching–learning process, oriented towards the formation of democratic, active, critical and participatory citizens in Latin America.
