Abstract

Since 1971 in our department out of a total of 3010 myocardial revascularization operations, left ventricular (LV) aneurysmectomy using Cooley’s technique was performed in 203 patients, with a mortality of 7.8% (16 deaths) within 30 days following the operation. Of the operated patients, 175 were followed up. Within 3 years after the operation, mortality was 10% and the actuarial curve showed a survival rate (operative mortality included) of 80% at 5 years and 70% at 10 years. Among the survivors those who suffered from angina before aneurysmectomy improved in 94.8% of cases, while those operated on for cardiac failure improved in 82.2% of cases. Although these results may be considered satisfactory, the hemodynamic parameters registered in our operated patients group showed a poor improvement in the LV contractile function.
