Abstract

Building on dual-process theories of self-regulation, a recent theoretical model, the Physical Activity Adoption and Maintenance Model (PAAM model; Strobach et al., 2020) provides an elaborate understanding of explicit and implicit processes in the self-regulation of physical activity behaviour. In this model, explicit processes include physical activity intentions, trait self-regulation, and executive functions while implicit processes include habit strength and affective reactions. In the present research project, we aim to examine the PAAM model in a multi-national study including samples from Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Canada, USA and South Africa. The postulated effects of implicit and explicit processes on physical activity behaviour will be tested in a micro-longitudinal study design.
