Metastable ion characteristics

A fully-automated system incorporating a Nier—Johnson geometry mass spectrometer and an on-line computer designed originally to collect high-resolution data has been modified to acquire and reduce metastable ion data produced by the Barber—Elliott—Major defocusing technique. Factors affecting system performance have been identified, and a variety of operating modes are proposed.
