Abstract
- XMM‐Newton and Chandra observations of quasars suggest the presence of high‐velocity outfiows of ionized absorbing material with mass‐outflow rates of up to a few M⊙ yr−1 that are considerably higher than those based on the wind properties derived from UV BALs. Quasar winds might be more powerful than what we previously thought. X‐ray absorption lines produced by outfiowing material detected in several quasars are possibly probing a highly ionized and high velocity component of the accretion disk wind that appears to be distinct from the absorbers detected in the optical and UV wavebands. We present X‐ray absorption line diagnostics that allow us to constraint the properties of the outfiowing wind in quasars.
