Abstract

The damage effect of reactive structural materials (RSMs) is one of the focuses in this field. In this study, four new Zr-Ti-W alloys were prepared by adding Ti element on the basis of W-Zr alloys. These alloys have different densities and mechanical properties. The damage effect of these alloys on 18 mm thick Q235 steel plate under the condition of 1600— 1700 m/s impacting speed was investigated. The results show that the penetration power of Zr-Ti-W alloy is mainly affected by the density of the alloy. The higher the density is, the greater the penetration depth and crater diameter of the alloy bullet are. In addition to the high penetration depth and large crater diameter, the 20Ti alloy also exhibits excellent energy-releasing behavior. This alloy has the tremendous potential to be used as reactive fragments in military application. Besides, the Zr-Ti-W alloys designed in this study maintain good integrity under extreme loading conditions, which had successfully overcome the problem of poor overload resistance of W-Zr alloys.
