Abstract
- The respiratory needs of patients with high tetraplegia require a unique approach to ventilator weaning that takes into account their anatomical and physiological conditions. A team approach that is centered on the patient is essential to anticipate and prevent pulmonary complications, which is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in patients with spinal cord injury. At Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, the Rehabilitation Trauma Center incorporates rehabilitation philosophies regarding ventilator weaning in an acute setting. This article describes patient characteristics and respiratory issues in patients with high tetraplegia, along with the techniques used to successfully wean these individuals.
