Abstract

Knowledge is a core source of energy for any organization and has been repeatedly highlighted as a critical element for organizational survival in our increasingly dynamic world. With the increased importance of knowledge comes the importance that it be managed effectively for organizational success and innovation. Desired organizational performance outcomes can be enhanced by including diverse knowledge and perspectives in knowledge sharing practices throughout the organization. In this chapter, we highlight the use of communities of practice as a tool to leverage human diversity and structural diversity to optimize knowledge management and improve organizational outcomes in a variety of organizational contexts.
