Abstract

The effects that could give rise to an isotopic shift in the spectrum of a triatomic Jahn—Teller distorted molecule are discussed. Comparison between calculations and experimental observations in the A–X band systems of 21Li3, 20Li3 and 19Li3 confirms the dominant influence of variations in the kinetic energy whereas any change in the electronic motion can be neglected. The isotopic shift mass dependence is drastically different for pseudo-rotational or vibronic series and allows an efficient probing of Jahn—Teller potential surfaces.
