Abstract

In 1964, two specimens of a unique sciaenid fish (herein described as new) were taken off the Caribbean coast of Colombia, South America. The new species is characterized by a relatively long pectoral fin, a large eye, and a single mental barbel that is laterally flattened with a moderately large elliptical pore at the middle of the anterior edge. The swimbladder is elongate-ovoid in shape (bluntly rounded anteriorly, tapering sharply posteriorly) with no lateral appendages. The swim-bladder structure combined with the single mental barbel associates the species with the tribe Umbrinini. The reasons for placing the new species in the genus Umbrina are discussed.
