Abstract

The effect of temperature on the nonlinearity of ultrasonic waves propagating in metallic solids was studied experimentally. The metal block and rail were used as experimental objects respectively. The nonlinear parameters of ultrasonic bulk waves propagating in a metal block and ultrasonic guided waves propagating in a rail were measured during the temperature change process. The experimental results indicate that temperature has obvious influence on the nonlinearity of ultrasonic bulk waves or guided waves propagating in metallic solids. The ultrasonic nonlinear parameter of metallic solids increases with the increase of temperature and decreases with the decrease of temperature, which suggesting that it is necessary to compensate the effect of temperature when using nonlinear ultrasonic technology to detect relevant structures.
