Abstract

Most benign diseases of the stomach are attributed to functional dyspepsia and acid-related disorders such as peptic ulcer disease. Dyspepsia is also the main manifestation of these acid-related conditions of the stomach. Functional dyspepsia comprises three subtypes: postprandial distress syndrome, epigastric pain syndrome, and a subtype with overlapping postprandial distress syndrome and epigastric pain syndrome features. Peptic ulcer disease is characterized by a non-malignant lesion in the gastrointestinal mucosa that may be acute, subacute, or chronic. Proton pump inhibitors significantly improve the management options available for patients with functional dyspepsia or peptic ulcer disease. Reduction of inappropriate prescribing of proton pump inhibitors in inpatient and outpatient settings can minimize the potential for adverse events.
