Abstract

Palliative care encompasses psychological, spiritual, and family domains along with physical concerns. Validated measures of relevant outcomes are increasingly available and can contribute to improving the quality of care by enhancing the assessment of disturbances, allowing for greater confidence in what is being measured, improving specificity in subsequent assessments or interventions, and increasing comparability and generalizability of research findings across different settings. This chapter provides an overview of validated tools that can be used to assess well-being, distress, and impairment in psychological, spiritual, and family domains of palliative care. Optimal clinical use of the measurement tools is discussed and the quality of research evidence is evaluated. Recommendations for integration of these measures into clinical practice and future directions for research are made.
