Abstract

Prediction of the surface quality of a manufacturing process has a very important role. Therefore, in this paper, a study on the prediction of surface roughness in turning process with the use of diamond insert was presented. Based on the results of previous studies, a new surface roughness model was formulated. In the model, the effects of the depth of cut, the nose radius of the insert, the feed rate, and the characteristics of the workpiece material were taken into account. The surface roughness calculated from the model has been successfully verified by an experiment. Hence, this proposed model can be used to predict the surface roughness in turning processes using diamond inserts.
