Complications in the Atrophic Mandible

Modern techniques for prosthetic dental rehabilitation would be unthinkable today without the use of osseointegrated implants. Although success rates are high, complications may occur, especially when complex soft tissue and/or bone reconstruction are necessary. Moreover, systemic conditions and use of antiresorptive drugs can have undesirable effects on healing and predispose to complications. This chapter deals with soft tissue and osseous complications related to the rehabilitation of the atrophic mandible, with emphasis on the etiology, prevention, and treatment of those problems.
